Sometimes I think it's arrogance that causes me to think the way I
do, but I think that to be a good thing. When I talk about the Web in
most respects I know exactly what I am talking about and what I need to
be doing to better the projects I am involved with. I am very confident
with my abilities and so I can sell myself and my ideas to those around
me.
So many times I run into Web professionals that are so out
of tune with what's reality on the Web it shocks me. I have written
about dealings with them before here and here.
It's all you can do though to go to work and not run into these people.
Today I ran into about 4 more. Talking about breadcrumbs and what
exactly they are. These are seasoned Web professionals! I would guess
50+ years between them.
I am beginning to think there is an
inevitable peak that Web developers hit, to where they no longer care
about what they do, and instead begin to focus on doing the things that
get them by. From everything I can tell it hits somewhere between 35
and 40 years of age, and it's all down hill from there.
Granted
there are going to be exceptions, and there are the young ones as well
that don't want to learn, but honestly be aware of it from now on. I
would expect that you will begin to see what I am talking about. The
younger generation is breathing life into the standards, accessibility,
new media and the Web in general, while the older generation is fading
themselves out.
Have any of you run into this? I am all ears; I
see it all the time and it freaks me out. It's not somewhere I want to
go with my career.
